Exam Structure — All Cambridge English Exams

All three main Cambridge English exams (B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency) test the same five skills through similar paper types, though at different difficulty levels:

This paper tests your ability to deal with different types of texts, including understanding meaning, structure, and language usage. It consists of 7-8 parts with 52-56 questions.

  • Parts 1-4 (Use of English): Multiple-choice cloze, open cloze, word formation, and key word transformations — testing grammar and vocabulary
  • Parts 5-7/8 (Reading): Multiple choice, gapped text, and multiple matching — testing reading comprehension

Duration: B2 First: 75 min | C1 Advanced: 90 min | C2 Proficiency: 90 min

Our Approach: Systematic vocabulary building using Cambridge word lists, grammar drills for transformation tasks, and extensive reading practice with authentic English texts.

This paper tests your ability to produce clear, well-structured texts in different styles and registers. It consists of 2 parts.

  • Part 1 (Compulsory): An essay based on input material — you must develop arguments and express opinions
  • Part 2 (Choice): Choose one task from several options — article, email/letter, report, review, or proposal

Duration: B2 First: 80 min | C1 Advanced: 90 min | C2 Proficiency: 90 min

Assessment: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, and Language — each equally weighted.

This paper tests your ability to understand spoken English from a range of sources. It consists of 4 parts with 30 questions. Each recording is played twice (unlike IELTS where it's played only once).

  • Part 1: Multiple choice — short extracts from conversations
  • Part 2: Sentence completion — longer monologue
  • Part 3: Multiple choice — interview or discussion
  • Part 4: Multiple matching — short extracts, match speakers to statements

Duration: Approximately 40 minutes for all levels

This paper tests your ability to communicate effectively in face-to-face situations. It's conducted with two candidates and two examiners, comprising 4 parts.

  • Part 1 — Interview (2 min): General questions about yourself, interests, opinions
  • Part 2 — Long Turn (4 min): Compare two photographs and answer a question, then respond to your partner's photos
  • Part 3 — Collaborative Task (4 min): Discuss visual prompts with your partner and reach a decision
  • Part 4 — Discussion (5 min): Extended discussion on topics related to Part 3

Duration: 14-15 minutes per pair
